At LilBird's quarterly check-up this past May, despite a fair growth in height, her very slow (almost non-existent) weight gain prompted the doctor to recommend celiac testing. Her A1C, which had been creeping up with each check-up, was 7.3 .. which isn't horrible by any means, but it is over the 7 that we strive to keep it under. I have very mixed feelings about the epidemic of "celiac" diagnoses, and before we even went in, I knew her weight gain had plateaued and was already considering food allergy testing and therapy. I shared with the doctor the very positive result my other daughter had with acupuncture allergy elimination (NAET), and she had no problem with us seeing if it could help LilBird and agreed to postpone the lab tests based on her next check-up. (I love open-minded care givers!)
The same kid who has to have her fingers pricked 6-8 times a day and a huge needle shot into her bottom every 3 days was extremely reluctant to try this virtually painless treatment. Having severe RA myself, I agreed to do it with her; I also convinced her that the alternative - a bunch of blood-draws (and possibly even more invasive testing) and the potential for a major dietary change - was far worse than giving this a try. Our initial testing revealed she had nutritional and/or physical allergies to 10 of 12 major food components. (Interestingly, mine showed a different 10 of 12, and included emotional allergies for every one of them, along with physical and/or nutritional. The emotional allergies were a surprise, but that's for another blog, another day.) Our acupuncturist was also nervous, she had never cleared anybody on an insulin pump, and I assured her that I would keep an extra-close watch on her blood sugars. She cleared us both for egg that day, and she had a single low during the 25-hour avoidance time.
She used acupuncture "tacks" instead of needles on her, and LilBird had to admit it wasn't painful like she expected it to be.
We have now been through clearings for calcium, Vitamin C and B-complex. She experienced 2 lows with calcium, but none with Vitamin C or B-complex. B-complex had me most curious about the result because it was a major allergen for my other daughter (a B-complex supplement caused an ear infection within 24 hours prior to being cleared of the allergy). In the seven days following that last clearing, only 5 of 40 blood-sugar checks were even out-of-target-range! We are scheduled to clear sugar next. :)
I was hoping to get through the sugar clearing before her next check-up, but the scheduling just didn't work out. I was prepared to beg for another 3 months of postponing lab tests because I had convinced myself that we had to get through sugar and grains before I felt confident that there would be empirical results from the acupuncture. Today, not only was her A1C back down to an excellent 6.5, but her weight was up a full 2 pounds and her height was up a full inch! No begging necessary - she is out of the "danger zone" on their growth charts!
I shared again with the doctor that my own results have been surprising as well - the change I have felt emotionally has been crazy good, and I am anxious to get to the inflammatory allergens with hopes to see a physical change as well. The doctor was so impressed with our results, she asked for the contact information of our acupuncturist and the name of the therapy because she wants to try it for herself!
