Some Firsts

Last month, Dad's job had him traveling for a convention. One of the best benefits of homeschooling (that we've not often gotten to take advantage of) is the ability to be spontaneous with our schedule. So, LilBird and I tagged along for a mini-vacay to sunny Phoenix! We had a very loose agenda and gorgeous weather. And .. she got to fly on an airplane for the very first time! She loved it! (Be sure to ask her about Southwest Airlines cheering her on during her first flight.) I was a nervous wreck about security (Pretty BAD. For, like .. weeks.) but we sailed through easy peasy, and managed sugars not much differently than had we been at home. The only thing I had done wrong was not pack the medical liquids in their own bag (I'd included it with all the sharps), but Tulsa TSA was super helpful and I felt way more confident for the returning round of security. We had a fabulous time and got to see some family - ones we'd not seen in a while and some we'd never met before. We hiked, we pedi-cabbed, we visited the Science Museum. We ate lots of good food and just did what we wanted to do when we wanted to do it. We've decided flexible agendas are the way to travel!

Lily has begun her second season of dance competition. It took her most of the winter to convince me to let her take a self-choreographed contemporary solo. Her initial and constant argument was that she wanted to dance a piece that "means something". What evolved is a beautiful message of love and hope, earning a consistent 9/10 for choreography at her first competition. I am super proud of her and look forward to seeing it even more polished in the spring.

I know what you're thinking. I know. Where did that Little Bird go?! Well, let me just give you some numbers to put things in perspective. In almost two years' time, she has grown 6 inches and about 30 pounds (recall, at diagnosis she had weighed 35 pounds for two solid years), passing her sister in height and now even with me .. at 13 years old. Along with that, recall that hormones affect blood sugar, especially the growth hormones. Now, with all of that in mind, today's A1C is ...

                                                   6.1!!!!!
(Here is a graph for you who care to see the data that I get so excited about! 70% in range!)

Now, I've been proud of her A1C before, and we usually do a fair job hovering around the 7 target, but I'd have to dig out old log books to see how many years ago its been since she's been that far under. And, credit where it is due, she has been making an effort to take responsibility and make good decisions - in diabetes management as well as everyday life. I'm sure glad we're on the same team!
