Diabetes sucks. If it isn't one thing, it's another. It took two weeks of fighting highs to regain control after camp. (Fixed only by massive dose changes; which is a good sign that she is growing but also could indicate hormone changes or poor absorption since we've been limited to such a small area for site changes.) Today, we experienced hitting a bundle of nerves with a site change. We've had "squirters" (nearly uncontrollable blood squirting like a fountain from the fresh hole of a removed pump site), but the pain of today's "rare" occurrence sure makes us both nervous for the next one. Apparently, it can happen with shots, too, so I guess we're fortunate that this is the first time in all these years. I just hope I never have to hear her scream like that ever again, nor be the direct cause of any pain remotely like that.
Update: Now that the second set is in and seems to be fine, I should offer a little more information about hitting the nerves in case anybody ever encounters that. The pain was not immediate. I was able to fill the cannula, remove the old set and it took about 5 minutes for her to recognize there was a problem. When she felt it, though, it was sharp and a very sudden onset. She said her set hurt, got up and immediately said it really hurt bad, then she said, "It needs to come out!" and she started crying. She immediately got into position to remove it, buried her face in the pillow and screamed until it was out. I removed it as quickly and gently as possible. It was still tender for several hours afterward, but the sharpness was relieved as soon as it was removed. The cannula looked normal, the site looked normal. We both agreed calling the nurse at our clinic who has T1D was important. From my description of the events, she knew exactly what had happened and stressed that removing it immediately was the exact right thing to do. She said if she'd have tried to tough it out, it would have gotten worse. I can't imagine how badly it hurt. I feel horrible about it. She is fine now, and she braved the second set insertion like the champ she is.
